Writing and Designing for the Web

Instructions for the web design project

Steps for completing this assignment:

  • Stage One: In this part of the project you will be primarily studying design concepts and principles. You will also be asked to familiarize yourself with the technologies needed to create a fully functioning website.
  • Stage Two: Select your topic and client.
  • Stage Three: Locate and analyze websites that address an audience and topic similar to your own. In this class imitation is not suicide. Not only is it the sincerest form of flattery, it's the best way to learn how to compose in a particular genre.
  • Stage Four: Research your topic area and decide on site content.
  • Stage Five: Create drafts of your site using wireframes and other pre-production deliverables.
  • Stage Six: Finalize your website and submit for project review.

Deliverables

  1. Project Proposal and planning materials. A 500 word proposal is due before class on [insert date]. Your proposal should
    • describe the topic that you have chosen
    • clearly articulate your project goals and provide a rough sketch of how you intend to achieve those goals. (At this point you should also have some potential clients in mind)
    • Your initial planning materials should consist of a catalogue of each team member's relevant knowledge and areas of expertise, as well as a proposed timeline and task allocation chart. Recommended planning documents are included below.
  2. Genre Analysis. This short document should review the conventions of the web genre with specific emphasis on the sites that you locate during stage three of the project. The format for this is at your disccretion. However, I recommend identifying a list of generic conventions, describing them individually and following that up with examples from your sample website. Each group member is responsible for locating and analyzing at least one website.
  3. Research Logs. These are individual group member entries cataloging the research in your topic area. Each research log post should contain complete citation materials and summaries of content. Due dates are ongoing. Additional information will be provided on the course calendar.
  4. Wireframes and Pre-production Deliverables. These deliverables will serve as drafts for your website and should be posted as pdf attachments to the blog of one of your group members.
  5. Final Draft of Website. You will turn in a fully functioning website suitable for immediate publication. It should be carefully proofread and edited and be virtually error free. The final draft will be posted on my webspace.
